Mary Elizabeth Vernon passed away peacefully at Morton Arbor Health Hospital on July 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 1, 1949, in Dallas, Texas, to Thelma Maxine White and Sherman Mathew Vernon Jr., Mary’s life was a journey filled with love, adventure, and unwavering compassion.

Mary’s parents divorced when she was very young. Her early years were marked by travel with her father, moving from Texas to Alabama, New York, Illinois, California, and even Mexico. These experiences shaped her open heart and adventurous soul.

Mary had two children from separate marriages, each a cherished part of her life and legacy. Throughout Mary's life, she worked many jobs, but her heart shone brightest in her roles as a CNA for children with special needs, and at the VA hospital with injured veterans during the Vietnam era. Her kindness and dedication touched countless lives.

Mary’s greatest joy came when she settled in Salkum, Washington, and met the love of her life, Charles “Bones” Bartley. Together, they blended their families and created a warm, loving home in Mossyrock. Mary and Charlie never liked to sit still, they took pride in her home both inside and out. Their home was a testament to their teamwork and pride, and Mary’s loving touch. The kitchen was the heart of their home, always filled with the aroma of homemade chocolate chip cookies and the comfort of home-canned food. There was always an open chair at the table, ready for anyone who needed a meal, a laugh, or a shoulder to lean on.

Mary and Charlie shared a passion for "road trips", traveling across eastern Washington, the coast, and even down to Arizona, where they lived for a short time. However, no matter where they went, Mossyrock was always home. Their partnership was one of true friendship and devotion, and together they were active members of the East Lewis County Gleaners, always ready to lend a helping hand.

Mary’s love extended beyond her immediate family. She was a proud grandmother, the heart and glue that held everyone together. She was known for her infectious laughter, her open arms, and her unwavering support. Her love for card games brought family and friends together, filling evenings with joy, friendly competition, and cherished memories. Mary’s laughter will echo in the hearts of all who gathered around the table with her.

Mary is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Bartley; her father, Sherman Mathew Vernon Jr.; her mother, Thelma Maxine White; her stepmother, Lillian Agnes Vernon; and her brothers, Matthew and Sherman Mathew Vernon III.

She is survived by her sister Gloria Murray; her son David Vernon; her daughters Margarita Maggie Jara (James Workman), Cheryl (Jason) Quick, Stacey (Jesus) Andrade; her grandchildren Amanda Jennings, Jason Quick Jr., Aaron and Logan Quick, Martin and Austin Andrade, JC Workman, RJ Workman (Amelia Fuchs), and EmmaLee Workman; her great-grandchild Rycker Longino; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Per Mary’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Instead, a private graveside gathering of her children and grandchildren will be held to honor her memory.

Mary’s light, love, and laughter will forever shine in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in every garden bloom and every shared meal.
